Micro-faceted 3½ mm iolite beads and 9x13 mm iolite briolettes are wire-wrapped in platinum and hand-knotted with 8 to 9½ millimeter Tahitian drop pearls and round pearls, with 6½ to 7 millimeter Japanese Akoya silver-blue pearls. The centerpiece Tahitian pearl is 14½ millimeters. The diamond-accented clasp is 14 karat white gold, with 14 karat white gold headpins. Length: 22 inches
The name iolite comes from the Greek word for violet. Another name is dichroite, a Greek word meaning two-colored rock, a reference to iolite's strong pleochroism. It has also been called water-sapphire and Viking compass. Because of its usefulness in determining the location of the sun on overcast days, the Vikings used it to navigate. This works by determining the direction of polarization of the sky overhead.
