Faceted iolite fans and faceted button beads are hand-knotted with curved sterling silver tube beads and crystal bicones. The centerpiece is a faceted iolite teardrop. Wire-wrap, findings and heart clasp are sterling silver. Length: 19 inches.
The transparent variety of iolite makes a lovely gemstone. The name iolite comes from the Greek word for violet. Another name is dichroite, a Greek word meaning two-colored rock, a reference to iolite's strong pleochroism. It has also been called water-sapphire and Viking compass. The Vikings used iolite to navigate by the sun. Iolite polarizes light, which enables the navigator to locate the sun on overcast days.
Pleochroism is an optical phenomenon in which a stone has different colors when seen at different angles with respect to the light source. Pleochroistic minerals show different colors when rotated in light and viewed from different angles.
